416 and 414

Hello guys,

Here I go again with questions, so please bear with me.

Any of you had experienced with using a 416 on 620 cabs for LF duties? Or a 414 on 612C/620 using an adaptor plate for LF duty?

I will mate it with 288C and planning to cross it at around 800 hz or above.

I have, but I used 511s and 802s on top. It was OK but I think the distance between drivers was a bit too far. I could hear the individual drivers. I didn't measure them.

Ahh, yes! I forgot to consider that. Although I am using 416 on 612C with Azura 425 horns crossed at 850 hz and seems to work fine. Bottom lip of the horn about two inches on top of the top lip of the 416 mounted in the cabs. In fact, it is uncanny sometimes depending on the recording, as it seems that the stereo image is deep and go way beyond the 10 feet plus width of the L and R channel. Maybe I got lucky! Onced I matched the sensitivity of the 416 to that of the 288 it seems that the two integrate really well.

Sounds like an excellent combo if you ask me Abe, the 416 I think go down to 20 Hz and aren't the 288's like the holy grail of HF drivers? IMHO you can't get better.

I agree--sounds like a great setup. If I were going to experiment with it, I'd consider adding a tweeter to get the h.f. response past the 12,000 hz that the 288 provides.....

I have tried a 416 in a 612C with 288 and a N500-8A crossover.I agree with Zelgall that you have to drop the horn down to just above the woofer also you have to pad the 288 down as it will overpower a single woofer and sound like all Mid-HF.When I shelved the 88 it did sound effort less.With a little work or tweaking can be a good combination.

Here is what I got at present:

1.) 288 and 416 on 612C's. Horns sitting on top of the 612C via wooden platform. Measured and marked the distance of the 416 VC to the plane of the 612C front baffle, then aligned 288 VC from this place. Azura horn diameter is ~16 inches, bottom lip of the horn 2.25" on the top lip of the 416. Cabs sitting on constraint layer baltic birch platform about 4".

2.) XO is 1201 or 500C or 2nd order Butterworth at 850 Hz, 288 attenuated by Fostex Lpad to match 416 ouput of (~97 dB)

3.) Tweeter (Fostex T90A) with 1uF oil cap and attenuated by an Lpad, also aligned on the same plane as the 288 and 416.

Here's a picture of the setup.This is when i had it mounted to a tar-filled 1005.I remounted to a 511 E and was able to drop it down 4-5" which made a big difference.
